Software Freedom Day 2008
We will be going to organize the SFD 2008 on the 20th September 2008 (Saturday), therefore we would like members to volunteer to help out on that day with the planning and preparation of the event.

1. Resources
To get as many VOLUTEERS as possible to help out with the planning and during the celebration. All volunteers will need to be briefed on what to do, what to expect, roster (if required) and so forth. Volunteer may be given a SFD shirt to wear during the celebration.We also need to have the following resources available during the SFD 2008:
- shirt (see section 8 - Attachments) printing for all volunteers,
- blank CDs to burn out software and OSes,
- computers (laptop and PC for demo) with cabling and Internet,
- tables and chairs (if not provided)
- bunting, banners, leaflets, posters and so forth
- freebies and goodies :-P
We can give out the following freebies:
- The OpenDisc
- other suggestions ??
2. Location(s) for the event
We need to source for location to celebrate the SFD 2008, which must be strategic for public to approach, ask questions, hands-on, etc. Can be at few different locations (or cities) throughout Sarawak.Here are some proposed venues in Kuching:
- OneTJ – will not be completed in September, out of the list
- Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS)
- Boulevard shopping mall
- other suggestions ??
3. Publicity
We need some publicity on the event to attract the crowd. Here is what we have in mind at the moment:- do press release to major locals newspapers, magazines, etc earlier (a week or two) to announce and introduce about the SFD 2008 as well as the activities of the day

- publish (write ups, image banners, etc) to local famous blog sites, forums, mailing list, etc

4. Activities
Some of the suggested activities are:- InstallFest on various open source OSes as well as software (firefox, openoffice.org, etc)
- demo machines for public to hand-on with various open source OSes and software
- Q&A session with public on various open source questions
- Workshops to public and KCBA on selected open source topics (such as OS installation, OpenOffice.org training
Still thinking of whether should we invite speakers from international organizations such as Red Hat, Ubuntu, etc. But this is depend on whether they have the fund for things like this or not, or whether we can get funds for their traveling and expenses or not. ;-)
5. Sponsorships & partnerships
Try to contact the following organizations to get sponsorship and partnership:- Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) -> sponsorship of venue and monetary
- Open Source Competency Centre (OSCC) -> showcase of various projects and OSS in Government
- Novell Malaysia -> freebies, installation & introductory workshop for SLED / SLES
- Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) > sponsorship, human resources & publicity
- MyOSS -> talks on any OSS topic
- Kuching Computer Business Association (KCBA) -> monetary & equipments sponsorship
- other suggestions ??
We also need to look for sponsorship of the following:
- accommodation for invited guests
- transportation of the invited guests
- shirts, cap, etc etc etc.
6. Proposed schedule
This is the proposed schedule for the day, but bear in mind that this is only a proposal and we only can have the following activities if we able to grab those speakers and organizations:Talks / seminars schedule:
- 0900 - 0930 > Welcoming of guests
- 0930 - 1000 > Introduction to the event and KOSC (who are we and what we do)
- 1030 - 1130 > Talk by MyOSS - topic: "Intro to FOSS and the benefits"
- 1330 - 1430 > Talk by OSCC - topic: "Malaysia Government with FOSS"
- 1500 - 1600 > Talk by Novell Malaysia - topic: "FOSS for businesses"
Workshops schedule:
- 1030 - 1130 > Novell SLED / SLES installation and configuration (Novell Malaysia)
- 1330 - 1430 > Ubuntu installation and configuration (KOSC)
- 1500 - 1600 > OpenOffice.org installation and how-to (KOSC)
Other activities:
- 0900 - 1600 > on going InstallFest, Q&A, etc at KOSC booth
- 0900 - 1600 > hands-on units for visitors to try out
7. To do
Here are some of the items / tasks to be done:- Register ourselves as a team with SFD – Done @ 2008-06-02
- Contact all parties involves (sponsors, invited speakers, etc) – In progress
- Hunt for venues / locations – In progress
- Download all the required ISO (CD image) file – In progress
- Prepare items required for the event (tables, computers, banners, etc)
- Finalizing the event schedule / activities
- Design brochures, leaflets, forms, etc
- Request from UNIMAS to have a t-shirt design (UNIMAS version, not yet finalized) (refer to the shirt design)
- ...
